[Special Lecture] Making Competitive Advantage Sustainable in Sport

The Korean Archery Association and World Archery Vice President Kyu Hyung Han gave a special lecture about the attributes that make competitive advantage sustainable in sport on February 22, 2022.

 

Mr. Han provided the lecture with a team from the Korean Archery Association where they first explained the long history of Korean archery.

 

Korea has long dominated archery as demonstrated by Team Korea sweeping the gold medals in archery at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics last year and the Korean women’s team in archery consistently acquiring the Olympian gold since the sport was first introduced at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.

 

The lecture continued with a case study on how the Korean Archery Association selected and trained athletes for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in addition to the meticulous evaluation of the Tokyo performance in preparation for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

 

This special lecture was conducted online, and a Q&A session was held after the lecture.

International Sports Diplomacy Research Institute President Yoon Kang-Ro

International Sports Diplomacy Research Institute President Yoon Kang-Ro gave a special lecture about the success factors of Seoul1988 & PyeongChang2018 Games online from the Dream Together Master Office situated at the Seoul National University Building 153 on Friday, August 21. SNU Professor and DTM Director Kang Joon-ho introduced Mr. Yoon Kang-Ro to over 100 participants including Dream Together Master and SNU students as well as sport enthusiasts, who later had an opportunity to actively engage in a Q&A session.

Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon

Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon gave a special lecture about Sports and the UN SDGs at the Seoul National University Sports Education and Research Building on November 5, Tuesday. SNU Professor Kang Joon-ho introduced Mr. Ban Ki-moon to over 200 participants including Dream Together Master and SNU students, who later had an opportunity to actively engage in a Q&A session.

[Special Lecture] LEE Hee-beom, President of POCOG
To give better understanding about PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games and impact and ongoing task of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, LEE Hee-beom, President of the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter speaks before the DTM 5 batch students in a lecture at the Seoul National University on May 16, 2018.   Mr. LEE Hee-beom is a President of The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Lee began his career as a Government official in 1972 and served as Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy from 2003 to 2006. He then held executive positions at institutions and companies including the Korea International Trade Association, the Korea Employers Federation, STX Energy and STX Heavy Industries. He is currently an advisor of the LG International Corporation. [Special Lecture] Dae Hee Kwak, Professor of University of Michigan
On December 15th, DTM invited a special guest Dae Hee Kwak, professor of University of Michigan. Dae Hee Kwak shared his invaluable experience and knowledge under the topic of “Greater Social Impact Through Strategic Partnership”. He introduced sports as a platform to expand socially responsible initiatives. By analyzing the previous cases of sponsorship, the professor illustrated how sports can deliver positive values to the society by partnership. He proposed 5 strategies to make partnership perform successfully. Clear objectives, transparency of the process, proper communication strategies, public participation, and multiple identities were mentioned as 5 factors to ensure positive impact of sports and the sports partnership.   Dae Hee Kwak is a professor of Sport Management at University of Michigan and is also a Director of Center for Sport Marketing Research. Dr. Kwak’s research focuses on sport consumer behavior in various sport-related consumption contexts. His long-term research goal is to identify how sport consumer behavior is similar or dissimilar with other types of consumer behavior. [Special Lecture] Dr. Michael Sagas
On July 18th, DTM had a special lecture with a very special guest from the University of Florida, Professor and Chair Dr. Michael Sagas. He gave a presentation with the tile of “Athlete Development”. During the lecture, he emphasized that proper and effective interventions on athletes are necessary to leverage opportunities, overcome barriers, and cope with challenges. Also, he stressed that understanding Athlete Development Literacy model that the knowledge, awareness, skills, and confidence necessary to make sound decisions on how to utilize and capitalize on available resources to develop as an athlete is important for athletes to experience overall well-being inside and outside of the athletic arena, and athletes should perceive it as an intervention tool which helps to improve their sports performance and success in lives away from and after sports. [Special Lecture] Prof. Minsoo Kang
A special Lecture was held on June 16th, 2017 at Seoul National University Building 71-1 Room 212. Professor, Minsoo Kang who is a Dean of Department of Health, Exercise Science, and Recreation in University of Mississippi gave a lecture on the “Advantages of Statistics in Sports”. He presented about the purpose of statistics in sports which are placement, diagnosis, prediction, achievement, and program evaluation and his recent project regarding the application of statistics in sports: using a mathematical model: Benford’s Law. He started the lecture by explaining the definition of key terms in statistics such as measurement, evaluation, and statistics to help students better understand his lecture.During the lecture, He defined that statistics is a tool for evaluation, which include collecting, analyzing, and interpreting of measurement data and emphasized that statistics play an important role in modern sports as advancement of technology. In addition, he mentioned that it can help coaches and players instantly make more informed decisions that could decide wins and losses. [Special Lecture] Dr. Chungwon Choue
On April 28th, DTM had a special lecture with a very special guest from the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), President Chungwon Choue. He gave a presentation with the tile of “Social Responsibility of International Sport Federation – Globalization of Taedwondo.” He mentioned that WTF put a lot of efforts, such as launching reform committee, expanding media exposure and participation of women and handicapped, and improving fairness of referees to remain as a core sport of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic. Also, he emphasized that the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF), a WTF initiative, would be able to assist and empower refugees, and so it will enable to carry out its social responsibility as an international federation. Dream Together Master students had a very special guest from German Sport University Cologne on January 18th, 2017. Prof. Christoph Breuer is a Vice-President of Resources & Quality Management in German Sport University Cologne. He gave a presentation with the tile of “Value creation in sport business : New insights based on platform theory, economics of attention and experimental economics.” Dream Together Master students learnt new ideas that would help improve the world with sport.

[Special Lecture] Dr. William ‘Bill’ Sutton
Dream Together Master students had a very special guest from University of South Florida on December 14th, 2016. Dr. William A. “Bill&” Sutton is a distinguished academician and a proven sports marketing practitioner. Dr. William Bill Sutton gave a presentation on sports future evolution based on his unique and ample experience. During his presentation, virtual reality used in sport field and its impact was discussed. He said that virtual reality brings the fan sitting at home to feel as sitting courtside at the game which is a way to keep the sports fan. He closed his lecture by emphasizing the employment opportunities in the next decade will foster that the industry is looking for explorers. Dream Together Master students learnt new ideas that would help improve the world with sport.
