Sport Values-Based Coaching Methodology – Football 4 Peace Plays A Significant Role in Promoting Peace in the Communities

Six Dream Together Master 5th batch students Gobinath Sivarajah, Rijki Kurniawan, John Monyo, Nicholas Chipeta, Ali Hussien, and David Hodgson participated in ‘Football 4 Peace’ – F4P training camp hosted by Football 4 Peace Korea and Korean Sharing Movement from August 9th to 12th 2018 at Seoul National University. The F4P is not only a sports skill and technical knowledge enhancement program but also a methodology session which teaches values-based sport coaching through the medium of football. F4P aims to promote positive values associated with good citizenship and focuses on promoting the values of equity, inclusion, trust, responsibility, and respect through football.

During the camp, the F4P International values-based coaching methodology was introduced by senior lecturers at the University of Brighton, the U.K. 50 volunteers from various universities and schools in Seoul took part in the training camp and were awarded certificates for their active participation. Especially, 50 children from various schools were invited and given some basic and fun activities to mingle with each other and resource persons. After each of the activities, the children were given opportunity to consider what they have learned from the wide range of activities associated with peace and how they would apply this concept or skill in a practical setting.

As a graduate student of sport management at Seoul National University, it was praiseworthy to participate in such training camp. They learned how an activity transforms to a value which helps them to promote mutual understanding in various communities and realized that sport increases the possibility to connect all community people together. Nicholas Chipeta said “The Football 4 Peace training camp provided an opportunity for me to recall the importance of values-based coaching. The training camp was the driving motivation in me to pay much attention to values-based coaching. I believe that this methodology has great power to make better individuals in the society”

Firas got involved with Jordan Triathlon Committee (JTC) in the public relations sector and event management. This opportunity was the very first step for him to apply all the theories what he had learned from the classes to the real life. With the continued support of him, JTC has successfully managed to run the 3rd Dead Sea Triathlon & Duathlon. This event was considered one of the most successful triathlon events of all time. His efforts expanded JTC’s horizons to start planning for bigger triathlon events in the country. Jordan will host an official ITU race in October 2018 and planning for future Ironman 70.3 race.

After the amazing journey, Firas, as a fresh administrator who is eager for a personal development in dynamic sport field, went back to his home country to pursue his passion in sport. On a personal level and away from the administrative field, he is still representing his country as an athlete and still pursuing his Olympic dream.

He also volunteered to coach cross country at “Edenglen Primary School” when he was on a training camp in Johannesburg-South Africa. His main goal was to teach young generation about Olympic values such as friendship & excellence, in addition to sportsmanship through training. Because of his efforts, the whole team qualified for the D17 championships.

Anoma-Conference+Promotion

M.K.A Anoma Rathnayaka-1st Batch

Sri Lanka

Senior Lecturer, Department of Sport Science and Physical Education

University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka

” I never dreamed about success, I worked for it” – Estée Lauder

-To begin with this article, I firmly believe that even an ordinary person can achieve his/her dreams if they have the will and dedication. Not every opportunity can happen within one night, there will be certain barriers to face and some may even demotivate you and hence, give up in achieving what you truly want. Being an ordinary girl myself, I always dreamed of becoming a Lecturer at the university I graduated from; University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka.

Ever since 2008, all I could think of was how could a person like me achieve such a high post. After my graduation, I believed that I had the qualifications to become a Lecturer, however, I was turned down by my University, some people thought that I had no luck and I should try again later. Most people may think that this was the end of my journey but not everyone knew that I considered this to be a challenge and prove others wrong. After this incident, I wanted to get a Master Degree in Sports Management. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka does not offer this degree (something that I am currently working on to make it possible for a degree as such to exist in my country), therefore, I had to look somewhere else which could offer me this degree. Research after research, I found out that the fees were too high for me to pay, this made me visit Dubai in search of a job and earn enough to independently cover up my tuition fees.

Days after days, months after months and years after years, I finally took tiny steps on the staircase to my success, the first was to check the best universities which provides Master Degree in Sports Management, I came across two; a university in Russia and South Korea to my luck, both the universities provide full scholarships. The hardest part was to pick which university to go to as I was highly interested in both the universities. After doing a research on both the countries, I found that South Korea was much more convenient for me; it ranks Asia number 7 for sport studies and South Korea number 1 DTM programme in terms of best professors present, universities are well reputed, the South Korean atmosphere is suitable for a person like me, nonetheless, I was truly inspired by Dream Together Mission’s vision – “Dream, The power it gives to overcome difficulties in life. Together, with people who believe in the power of sports and for the countries that have yet to maximize the full potential of sport in changing life and society.

Master, to foster future leaders in the field of sport management contributing to peace and development through sports”. It was that vision of theirs which inspired me to aim higher and achieve more and more in life, even at present, whenever a person tries to put me down, I think of that vision and pull myself up together. To be quite frank, I am nothing but proud of myself that I achieved so much at such a young age. The values of these achievements are beyond infinity. But I wouldn’t have achieved any of the things I have right now if it wasn’t for South Korea’s DTM program.

I will forever be thankful for them because they’re the reason why I’m in this position in life right now. I believe that as a citizen I have made my country proud as well. Knowing my success story, everyone respected South Korea’s DTM program because of their value, hence, foreign countries requested me to be a part of conference events (Global Sports on Physical Education and Sports Sciences in India 2018) as a conference lead speaker which is organized by University College at of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, Acharya Nagarjuna University in collaboration with National Association of Physical Education and Sport Sciences on 11th,12th and 13th October in order to motivate and inspire their people. Being given the chance to act as a conference lead speaker was a proud moment but also being the first woman conference speaker in Sri Lanka in the field of sports management was another thing to be proud as well.

As a first batch student myself, I would like to advice the future generation that no matter how many difficulties you may face, never give up. Always follow this saying “Where there’s a will, there’s a way” and another advice ANYONE is to never put anyone else down just because of your achievements rather treat everyone equally they way you would want to be treated by others.

Last but not least, I would like to thank University of Kelaniya as they are known to have respect for the qualifications a person has rather than judging them based on their status, and a very special thanks to South Korea’s DTM degree because if it wasn’t for them I would never get the chance to be where I am right now. This may be seem like the end of my journey, however, I have yet more to achieve and a lot more to go through.

Maritime Sport Experience

Tan, Merey

Singapore

Manager of National Youth Sports Institute

5th batch student

“Live in the sunshine. Swim in the sea. Drink in the wild air.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

From August 13th to 15th, 24 students from the 5th Dream Together Master went to Goseong Yacht Club to celebrate the end of summer semester classes. We had the pleasure of enjoying maritime experience, accompanied by DTM staffs.

[Merey Tan (Singapore) on a dinghy yacht.]

Day 1, Aug 13th 2018 – In a bus journey that took slightly more than five hours, we traversed from Seoul National University – the Northern part of South Korea all way down South, to Goseong Yacht Club in Gyeongsangnam-do. John Monyo from Ghana unleashed his creativity and composed a song dedicated to Professor Kang, with the guys singing and marching along to the lyrics of

‘D..T..M… Here we come…(2x). We finished lectures;

You said,” Let’s go maritime experience.” (4x)

D.T.M. Staff …. Here we come; Professor Kang … Here we come.

We finished lectures; You said let’s go maritime experience (4x)’

That enthusiasm rubbed off on everyone and the happy team checked into the chalets, geared up and all set to get wet! After a short theory session on the principles of sailing, our instructor gave a short demonstration on windsurfing. Like excited children, we were raring to go into the water and jumped onto the windsurfing boards immediately. After a few tries, some managed to harness the power of the wind, while those who fell into the water too often decided to try kayaking instead.

For most of my classmates, it was their first experience with windsurfing, sailing and kayaking. Ali Suliman from Sudan shared that he just learnt to swim recently after his best friend drowned while trying to save someone else. It was a traumatic experience for Ali, and he had to overcome his fear of the water, especially the sea. However, he was glad to have the chance to experience all these sea sports which he may not have the opportunity to do in Sudan.

[Sunny smiles, sunblock on and sunglasses up – All geared and ready to hit the water]

Day 1 ended with a sumptuous dinner at a local restaurant where we enjoyed the fresh seafood. As the night was still young, many of us continued with playing card games and the ‘Masters of Karaoke’ exercised their vocals and sang through the night.

Day 2, 14 Aug 2018 – ‘Rise and shine’ was the code word as all of us woke up early to enjoy our last day of maritime experience. With light winds caressing our faces, we were ready to set sail and hopped onto the Topaz topper boats straight after the instructor’s briefing ended. All ahoy !

It has been many years since I last sailed on a small craft, and I’m glad that I still remembered the basics. My first job in Singapore was to manage the Changi Sea Sports Club, so I have enjoyed all forms of sea sports for many years.

As the afternoon wore on, the crew from Goseong Yacht Club set up new play toys for our team, and we started jumping into the water from an elevated floating platform. The dare devils like Yaro and Mauricio started doing flips and somersaults, and the rest started to follow!

[Karate practitioners Myint Theingi (Myanmar) and Uzma Asghar (Pakistan) before their jump.]

It was our last night in the resort, and we made the best use of precious time with salsa aficionados Mauricio Hernandez (Columbia) and Paulina Pino (Ecuador) imparting their skills to May Kim (Korea) and Aminath Nashida (Maldives). Professors Kang and Lee also got into the jive and showed off their dancing prowess.

Tania Williams, national sailor from Malaysia, summed up our maritime experience best! “Indeed, it was an amazing experience! Being able to do something that I love. I felt so alive, just doing anything related to water activities. Honestly, I wish I could have stayed there longer just to be there; enjoying the sea life. However, all good things must come to an end. It has been a memorable journey to sail in Korea, exploring the view, the waves and most important – the company, memories and experience during the trip!”
