Topic: Lessons from PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
The PyeongChang Olympics have ended its 17 days of competition with a spectacular closing ceremony that once again saw athletes from unified Korea marching together. Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gave a special thanks to POCOG for all their supports and dedications. “Thank you POCOG, thank you Korea, thank you to all of you. You can be proud of your achievements. The PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games are the games of new horizons,” he added at the closing ceremony.
On May 16th, Dream Together Master invited Mr. Lee Hee-beom, President of the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games to hear key success factors and a sustainable legacy plan which can change a community, a region, and a nation.
Mr. Lee was confident to say that one of the success factors of PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games was an effort to peace and unity. Mr. Lee’s efforts to achieve the “Peace Olympics” were remarkable. He introduced the Olympic Truce resolution for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games entitled “Sport for Peace and Development: Building a Peaceful and Better World through Sport and the Olympic Ideal” to the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. By adopting this resolution, atmosphere of peace and stability in Northeast Asia has been created. South-North Korea assembled the unified team in women’s hockey and also had a joint march during the opening ceremony that allows for hope for a world where conflicts can be resolved peacefully. “Like 88 Seoul Olympics paved the way to the end of the cold war, PyeongChang 2018 became the catalyst for progress in the South-North Korea relationship,” said Mr. Lee. Last February, he was given the Olympic Order award after his efforts in coordinating the PyeongChang 2018 the “Peace Olympics”.
He also elaborated on the sustainable legacy plans for the PyeongChang 2018. He emphasized that PyeongChang legacy would serve as important momentum to turn the Gangwon region into a mecca of winter sports and tourism industry in Asia, and its vision is to create a new horizon for winter sports. “Sustainable Olympic facilities were built, and 6 newly built stadiums out of 12 will be used for sports and leisure activities to contribute to the development of winter sports in Korea and the region after Olympics,” he continued. “An ultra-high speed rail track has been opened, and this offers people accessible day trips from Seoul in less than two hours,” Mr. Lee said.
“I really appreciate volunteers from Dream Together Master who dedicated their time to volunteer services and their contributions.” He finished his lecture by applauding the unwavering support of the volunteers. He said that they made this game so special and built their long lasting legacies. He also mentioned that their participation and dedication were crucial to the success of the PyeongChang Olympics.
Mr. Lee began his career as a Government official in 1972 and served as Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy from 2003 to 2006. He then held executive positions at institutions and companies including the Korea International Trade Association, the Korea Employers Federation, STX Energy, and STX Heavy Industries.
